Mediacom Business Delivers Gigabit+ Fiber Solutionsâ„¢ to the National Flight Academy

Program Inspires Student Interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Gulf Breeze, FL – November 9, 2015 – The National Flight Academy, LLC (NFA), a subsidiary of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, is an innovative, technological hub that requires the latest and greatest broadband technology available to provide real-world science and technology experiences for students in grades 7-12. Mediacom Business, a division of Mediacom Communications Corporation, was called upon to use its proprietary, gigabit-enabled fiber optic infrastructure to power the NFA’s broadband requirements.

“If we lose connectivity, it’s a game-changer for us. It could be, literally, a game-stopper,” stated Chip Yarbrough, NFA Program Director and Captain of the Ambition, a simulated aircraft carrier. “We knew we needed a partner that would allow us to not only push signal out, but also handle information flow in. Mediacom Business was the right choice to partner with us from that standpoint.”

Boys and girls alike step aboard the Ambition into an immersive learning environment. Using Smartboard Tables®, the students calculate simulated flight headings for X12 Triad jets, capable of flying at 2 ½ times the speed of sound.

“If we’re not on the cutting edge, we’re no longer relevant,” said Cassie Redmyer, Major Gifts Officer at the National Flight Academy. “Recognizing declining interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills and standards in our country, the Academy’s mission is to inspire students, their parents, and schools to seek out and provide more challenging courses in these areas.”

“Our entire business is now paperless, and we operate off the cloud,” said Cody Thurber, Information Technology Analyst at the NFA. “Mediacom Business’ fiber network is the highway that gets us there. I don’t have to worry about my Internet connection going down, I don’t have to worry about maintaining it – they handle all of that for me.”

“The National Flight Academy utilizes technology to truly revolutionize the way young people are learning about aviation,” said Dan Templin, Senior Vice President of Mediacom Business. “The program’s data demands combined with the students’ data consumption on their own mobile devices requires a significant amount of bandwidth, and it’s our fiber backbone that makes it work.”

Mediacom Communications has invested nearly $1.4 billion over the past five years to maintain, expand and upgrade its robust broadband infrastructure that serves residential and business customers in some 1,500 communities across 22 states, according to Templin.  “Knowing that access to technology drives business growth, Mediacom built a delivery method to handle high-capacity broadband so forward-thinking institutions like the National Flight Academy have the bandwidth needed for today and into the future.”

About the National Flight Academy, LLC

The National Flight Academy, LLC (NFA) is a subsidiary of the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. The Academy is an educational activity authorized but not endorsed or financially supported by the United States Navy. The NFA is designed to address the serious concerns of declining Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills and standards in our country. The Academy’s mission is to inspire students who subsequently return to their parent schools and seek out the more challenging courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.

The NFA is a self-supporting, tuition-based educational program. In order to make the National Flight Academy adventure a reality for as many students as possible, we are committed to a financial aid program that enables a demographically and geographically diverse student population to attend.
